Yankee Doodle
“Yankee Doodle” began in the mid-18th century as a British satirical song, often attributed to British army surgeon Richard Shuckburgh around 1755. Its simple, catchy tune was used to mock colonial militia during the French and Indian War.
American forces later adopted the song, transforming ridicule into pride during the Revolutionary War. By the early 19th century, it had become a symbol of national identity, with countless verses added, altered, and improvised in parades, protests, and celebrations.
