The sheet music for “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” also known as “In the Pines” is free on the website but also available for download as a PDF. This is the Lead Belly arrangement of the song, which Nirvana based their version on.
Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
“Where Did You Sleep Last Night?,” also known as “In the Pines” and “My Girl” is a traditional folk song that originated in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. This would be the area from Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, southwesterly to the Great Smoky Mountains.
As with a lot of folk music, numerous recordings and versions of the song exist. Bill Monroe recorded a version in 1941 using the “In the Pines” title with slightly different words than the version below.
The chords and melody we used to transcribe the tune are based on versions of Lead Belly’s, which he recorded in the mid-40s.
In the early 1990s, Kurt Cobain also covered the song, reinterpreting one of Lead Belly’s versions. His band, Nirvana, also performed the song in 1993 for MTV’s Unplugged.
