When Johnny Comes Marching Home
“When Johnny Comes Marching Home” is a well-known song from the American Civil War. A later surge in popularity came around the Spanish-American War in 1898.
The words were written by Irish-American bandleader, Patrick Gilmour. The sheet music (the words, along with the melody), was published by Gilmour under the pseudonym “Louis Lambert” on September 26, 1863.
As far as where the music came from, Gilmour says, “a musical waif which I happened to hear somebody humming in the early days of the rebellion, and taking a fancy to it, wrote it down, dressed it up, gave it a name, and rhymed it into usefulness for a special purpose suited to the times.”
