Wabash Cannonball
“Wabash Cannonball” is an American folk song. J. A. Roff is credited for the song’s first known printed version in 1882 titled, “The Great Rock Island Route.” In 1904 William Kindt rewrote the lyrics under the title “Wabash Cannon Ball.”
From there, most versions would continue to stick to the melody but make changes to the words. Although there are many versions of the song, they all describe train known as the Wabash Cannonball traveling through the country, such as “along woodland over the hills and by the shore.”
One of the first recordings came from The Carter Family in 1929, but not released until 1932. Then in 1936, Roy Acuff recorded a version that became a hit, selling more than 10 million copies.
