History & Lyrics

“Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” shares the same melody with “The A.B.C.” and “Baa, Baa, Black Sheep.”

The origin of the melody of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” is from a pastoral song dating from 1740, according to Henri-Irénée Marrou, a French historian from the mid-twentieth century.

In 1761, the melody was set to a poem called, “Ah! vous dirai–je, maman” (Ah!, Will I Tell You, Mother).In 1781-1782 Mozart wrote, Twelve Variations on “Ah vous dirai–je, Maman”, based on the tune.

In 1806, Jane Taylor a, d her sister, Ann Taylor, published a book of poems called, Rhymes for the Nursery. Jane Taylor wrote the poem, “The Star,” for the book.

In 1838, in a book called, The Singing Master: First Class Tune, the tune is first seen in print together with the poem.

These are the words:

Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
 How I wonder what you are!
 Up above the world so high,
 Like a diamond in the sky.

When the blazing sun is gone,
 When he nothing shines upon,
 Then you show your little light,
 Twinkle, twinkle, through the night.

Then the traveler in the dark
 Thanks you for your tiny spark;
 He could not see where to go,
 If you did not twinkle so.

In the dark blue sky you keep,
 And often through my curtains peep,
 For you never shut your eye
 Till the sun is in the sky.

As your bright and tiny spark
 Lights the traveler in the dark,
 Though I know not what you are,
 Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
