The Girl From Ipanema
“The Girl from Ipanema” was written in 1962. The music was composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim and the original Portuguese lyrics were written by Vinicius de Moraes. Later, Norman Gimbel wrote English lyrics for the songs.
Who is the girl from Ipanema? Helô Pinheiro, a Brazilian model. One day in the winter of 1962, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes saw her strolling past Veloso bar-café, which was her daily routine. A path would sometimes lead her to the beach. This inspired them to write the song.

Bossa Nova Chords & Rhythm
What is a bossa nova pattern? It’s a style of guitar accompaniment created by João Gilberto. This is done by plucking the chords with your fingers – fingerstyle as written in the tab below. For more details on this Brazilian fingerstyle guitar rhythm pattern see Bossa Nova Rhythm Patterns where I describe it in more detail.
The chord progression below is to the “The Girl from Ipanema,” which I perform in the video above.
