The Foggy Dew
“The Foggy Dew” is an Irish rebel song with lyrics by Canon Charles O’Neill, set to a traditional air. Written around 1919, it reflects post–Easter Rising sentiment, urging remembrance of Irish independence fighters over service in World War I.
It entered the folk revival through performances by The Clancy Brothers, The Dubliners, and later Sinéad O’Connor with The Chieftains. Often sung unaccompanied or at a slow march tempo, its stark delivery gives the song a solemn, quietly confrontational power.
Trivia Bits
Despite its serious tone, the melody predates the lyrics by generations and was once used for lighter songs, showing how Irish folk tunes often migrate between love songs, laments, and political ballads.
Many singers intentionally avoid strict rhythm when performing “The Foggy Dew,” stretching phrases freely. This flexible timing reflects the sean-nós tradition, where emotional emphasis matters more than metrical precision, or ensemble uniformity, especially in solo settings.
During centenary events for the 1916 Rising, the song reappeared in unexpected settings, including orchestral arrangements and stadium crowds. Its chorusless structure can surprise listeners, relying on narrative verses rather than a familiar pop-style hook (a challenge for large ensembles).
