Symphony No. 7 (Allegretto)
Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Allegretto forms the second movement of Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92, premiered in 1813. Though part of a rhythmically exuberant symphony, this movement stands apart with its restrained tempo, minor-mode gravity, and insistent pulse, immediately capturing attention at the premiere.
Neither slow nor overtly dramatic, the Allegretto unfolds through layered repetition and subtle variation. Early audiences reportedly demanded an encore, and later conductors such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Carlos Kleiber treated it as an autonomous expressive statement within Beethoven’s symphonic output.
