Stompin’ at the Savoy

“Stompin’ at the Savoy” was composed in 1934 by Edgar Sampson, with credit also given to Chick Webb and Benny Goodman. Named for the famed Savoy Ballroom, the tune became a swing-era anthem. Webb’s orchestra, featuring a young Ella Fitzgerald, made an early hit recording that captured the ballroom’s exuberant energy.

The song’s 32-bar AABA form and buoyant riff structure made it ideal for dancers and improvisers alike. Later versions by Goodman and countless jazz artists secured its place as a standard, evoking the communal spirit and rhythmic drive of Harlem’s golden-age swing scene.
