Stella by Starlight
“Stella by Starlight” was composed in 1944 by Victor Young for the film The Uninvited. Originally an instrumental theme, its haunting, harmonically rich melody underscored the movie’s romantic mystery. Lyrics were added in 1946 by Ned Washington, transforming it into a song that quickly entered the popular and jazz repertoire.
The tune’s intricate chord progression—unusual for its time—made it especially attractive to improvisers. Recordings by artists such as Charlie Parker and Miles Davis helped establish it as a modern jazz standard, admired for both its structural sophistication and luminous melodic line.
