Silent Night
“Silent Night” was written in 1816 by Joseph Mohr, with music by Franz Xaver Gruber, and first performed in 1818 in Oberndorf, Austria. Emerging from a period of social hardship after the Napoleonic Wars, its calm tone offered quiet reassurance rather than grandeur.
The song spread quickly through Europe via folk singers and church musicians. Later recordings by Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, and Mahalia Jackson helped define its gentle, unadorned style, which continues to invite simple, intimate performances.
