Silent Night – Lead Sheet

Silent Night

“Silent Night” was written in 1816 by lyricist Joseph Mohr, with music composed by Franz Xaver Gruber, and first performed in 1818 in Oberndorf, Austria. Created during the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, it reflected a yearning for peace and simplicity.

Originally accompanied by guitar rather than organ, the song spread through traveling singers and church choirs. Performances by Bing Crosby and Mahalia Jackson later helped establish its global status as one of the most recorded Christmas songs in history.
