“On Green Dolphin Street” was written by composer Bronisław Kaper with lyrics by Ned Washington for the 1947 film Green Dolphin Street. Though the movie itself faded from memory, the song endured, gradually entering the jazz repertoire during the post-war era.

The tune gained lasting fame through instrumental recordings, especially Miles Davis’s 1958 version on Jazz Track. Its shifting tonal centers and elegant harmonic movement made it a favorite among jazz musicians, particularly for exploratory improvisation.
