Oh My Darling, Clementine
“Oh My Darling, Clementine” was written by Percy Montrose in 1884, drawing on Western frontier imagery during America’s post–Gold Rush era. Often mistaken for an anonymous folk relic, it began as a composed popular song with lightly comic undertones.
It spread quickly through vaudeville, schools, and early recordings, later popularized by Bing Crosby and Woody Guthrie. As the guitar rose in the late 19th century as a portable parlor and camp instrument, players carried the melody across homes, rail camps, and classrooms.
