History & Lyrics
“O Tannenbaum” is a traditional German folk song dating back to the 16th century. The modern lyrics were written in 1824 by Ernst Anshutz. The lyrics refer to the Tannenbaum’s (the fir tree’s) evergreen qualities. Later, in the 20th century, the song became associated with the Christmas tree.
