O Christmas Tree,” adapted from the German folk song “O Tannenbaum,” stems from a 16th-century melody with lyrics formalized in 1824 by Ernst Anschütz. Its simple, balanced phrasing helped it travel easily across Europe and into English-speaking traditions during the 19th century.
