Moonlight Sonata

Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven in 1801 and published in 1802, this piano sonata belongs to his early-to-middle period. It was dedicated to his student Giulietta Guicciardi and marked “quasi una fantasia,” signaling a freer structure than Classical norms.

The famous nickname was added decades later by critic Ludwig Rellstab, not by Beethoven. Its hushed opening movement contrasted sharply with expectations of the era, influencing later Romantic expression. The work remains a staple for pianists from Artur Schnabel to Daniel Barenboim.
