Misirlou – Lead Sheet

Misirlou

“Misirlou” originated as a traditional folk melody across the Ottoman Empire, shared by Greek, Jewish, and Arabic communities. Its first commercial recording was a 1927 rebetiko version by Tetos Demetriades, featuring a slow, hypnotic tempo that highlighted its roots in Middle Eastern maqam scales.

The work’s title translates to “Egyptian Girl,” reflecting a cross-cultural fascination with exoticism. While Dick Dale famously electrified the tune in 1962, earlier versions by Michalis Patrinos showcased the haunting, melodic fluidity of the oud and bouzouki before it became a surf-rock staple.
