Midnight Special
“Midnight Special” is a traditional American folk song, popularized by Huddie “Lead Belly” Ledbetter in the 1920s and ’30s. Its lyrics, depicting prisoners hoping for freedom and the train that might carry them home, reflect life in the American South under Jim Crow. Later performers like Creedence Clearwater Revival brought the song into rock, while early recordings featured stark, raw guitar accompaniment that highlighted the song’s haunting intimacy.
