Mary Had a Little Lamb
“Mary Had a Little Lamb” is an American nursery song with lyrics by Sarah Josepha Hale, first published as a poem in 1830. The simple narrative and rhyme scheme reflect early 19th-century children’s literature and moral verse traditions.
The melody became famous in 1877 when it was played on Thomas Edison’s phonograph, making it one of the first recorded songs. Notable later performances include versions by Bing Crosby and Stevie Ray Vaughan, spanning education, novelty, and popular music.
