Kumbaya
Scholars believe that “Kumbaya” originated on the islands off the coast of South Carolina. Here, the inhabitants of the islands spoke Gullah – a Creole language spoken by the African-American population living in some of the coastal regions of South-Eastern United States. The Gullah word “kumbaya” is the English phrase, “come by here.”
The first known recording was made in 1926 by folklorist, Robert Winslow Gordon. The song has since been recorded by dozens of artists, including Joan Baez, the Weavers, Odetta and Pete Seeger,
It later found its way to Angola in south-central Africa. Then, in the late 1950s, it was rediscovered and brought back to North America, where it became a standard campfire song.
