Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring
Written by Johann Sebastian Bach, Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring dates to 1723 as a chorale from his cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (BWV 147). The melody derives from a 1661 hymn by Johann Schop, with text by Martin Janus, placing the work firmly in the Lutheran Baroque tradition.
Best known from its use in Cantata No. 147 (Movements 6 and 10), the piece gained modern popularity through arrangements and recordings by performers such as Dame Myra Hess. Its serene, flowing obbligato and steady pulse make it a staple at weddings and sacred services.
