“It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” originated in 1849 when Edmund Sears wrote the poem during a period of national unrest. In 1850, Richard Storrs Willis composed the Carol melody, creating the version favored in America today.

Notable renditions by Frank Sinatra, Anne Murray, and Sixpence None the Richer have kept the hymn popular across eras. Its focus on “peace on earth” provided a solemn, hopeful anthem for a society then fractured by war and industrialization.
