Greensleeves
“Greensleeves” is a traditional English folk song first registered in 1580, emerging from the late Renaissance era of courtly love lyrics and modal melodies. Though long linked to Henry VIII, scholars now reject that claim, citing stylistic evidence.
The tune later inspired Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on Greensleeves (1934) and crossed genres through performers like John Coltrane and Jeff Beck. Its pairing with the carol “What Child Is This?” helped secure its lasting place in Western musical culture.
