Greensleeves
“Greensleeves” is a traditional English folk song dating to the late 16th century, first registered in 1580. Once attributed to Henry VIII—now widely disputed—it reflects Renaissance courtly love and modal melody styles, gaining early popularity through broadside ballads.
The tune inspired later adaptations, including Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on Greensleeves (1934). It has been performed by artists ranging from John Coltrane to Jeff Beck, and is often paired with the Christmas carol “What Child Is This?”, underscoring its enduring adaptability.
