Frére Jacques
“Frère Jacques” is a traditional French folk song, composer unknown, likely dating to the late 17th or early 18th century. First printed in France around the 1780s, it became a teaching staple for rounds, literacy, and communal singing.
It is famously sung as a four-part canon, and its melody appears in Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 (third movement) as a minor-key march. The tune’s simplicity encouraged countless recordings, from children’s choirs to jazz-inflected improvisations.
