Entre dos aguas

“Entre dos aguas” is an iconic instrumental flamenco rumba composed and performed by Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucía. Released in 1973 as the lead single from his album Fuente y caudal, the piece was an impromptu studio creation: producer José Torregrosa deemed the album short, prompting de Lucía to improvise it on the spot with bass and bongos added for its funky, accessible groove. The title—“Between Two Waters”—evokes the meeting of the Atlantic and Mediterranean at his hometown Algeciras, symbolizing flamenco’s blend of tradition and innovation during Spain’s post-Franco transition.

Selling over 300,000 copies and topping Spanish charts for 22 weeks (certified gold in 1976), it catapulted de Lucía to international fame, bridging flamenco with global audiences and influencing the genre’s evolution. Its hypnotic melody and virtuosic technique remain instantly recognizable; notable tributes include performances in tributes like the 2024 Latin GRAMMY Celebra event and appearances in films such as Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
