El Choclo
“El Choclo,” a cornerstone of the Guardia Vieja era, was composed by Ángel Villoldo around 1903. This quintessential Argentine tango premiered at El Americano, initially lacking the dramatic lyrics later added by Enrique Discépolo. Its driving, rhythmic vitality helped transition tango from scandalous brothels into polite society.
Legendary versions by Ángel D’Agostino and Francisco Canaro solidified its global fame, while Louis Armstrong’s 1955 adaptation, “Kiss of Fire,” reimagined the piece as a chart-topping pop hit, blending South American passion with American swing.
