El Choclo
“El Choclo” was composed by Ángel Villoldo around 1903, marking a pivotal moment in the Guardia Vieja era of Argentine tango. Originally an instrumental premiered at Buenos Aires’ El Americano, it was deceptively labeled a “Creole Dance” to bypass social stigmas associated with the genre’s brothel origins.
The piece gained global immortality through various iterations, including Enrique Santos Discépolo’s 1947 lyrics and Louis Armstrong’s 1955 jazz hit, “Kiss of Fire.” Notable interpretations by Francisco Canaro and Tita Merello helped transition the work from a rhythmic dance floor staple into a sophisticated “national anthem” of Argentina.
