Brahms’ Lullaby
Johannes Brahms composed Brahms Lullaby (Wiegenlied, Op. 49, No. 4) in 1868, during the Romantic era, setting a traditional German folk text. Originally written for voice and piano, it was dedicated to a friend celebrating the birth of her child, giving the song an intimate, domestic origin.
Though modest in scale, the piece became one of Western music’s most recognizable melodies. Singers such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Jessye Norman helped sustain its concert life, while countless instrumental and recorded adaptations carried it into nurseries, films, and popular culture worldwide.
