Brahms’ Lullaby

“Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, Gute Nacht” (“Lullaby: Good Evening, Good Night”) known as “Brahms’ Lullaby” or “Cradle Song” was published in 1868. The first verse came from a collection of German folk poems called Des Knaben Wunderhorn. The 2nd stanza was written by Georg Scherer in 1849.

Johannes Brahms composed “Wiegenlied” (“Brahms’ Lullaby) to commemorate the birth of a friend’s son.

“Brahms’ Lullaby” Lyrics

These are the English lyrics as sung by Elsie Baker (July 13, 1883 – August 16, 1971). The same lyrics that I used for the sheet music above. I really like this version – the recording, her voice, the lyrics, everything. It’s worth a listen.

Lullaby and good night,
With roses bedight,
With lilies o'er spread
Is baby's wee bed.
Lay thee down now and rest,
May thy slumber be blessed.
Lay thee down now and rest,
May thy slumber be blessed.

Lullaby and good night,
Thy mother's delight,
Bright angels beside
My darling abide.
They will guard thee at rest,
Thou shalt wake on my breast.
They will guard thee at rest,
Thou shalt wake on my breast.
