Brahms’ Lullaby
Composed in 1868 by Johannes Brahms, Wiegenlied, Op. 49, No. 4 was written for voice and piano and dedicated to Bertha Faber, whose family had supported the composer. Its gently rocking melody reflects the intimacy of 19th-century German domestic music-making.
The song became globally famous in the early 20th century through arrangements and recordings by artists such as Lotte Lehmann, Bing Crosby, and countless children’s choirs. Though often treated as a folk tune, it remains a carefully crafted art song with subtle harmonic warmth.
