Arioso

Arioso is by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750), drawn from Cantata BWV 156, Ich steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe, likely composed in 1729 during his Leipzig years. The opening movement’s lyrical oboe melody later became widely known as a standalone instrumental work.

Originally written for tenor and oboe, the piece gained new life through arrangements and recordings by performers such as Marcel Moyse and Pablo Casals. Its calm, suspended phrasing made it a favorite for reflective settings, memorials, and film soundtracks.
