Angel Eyes

“Angel Eyes” is a melancholic jazz standard composed by Matt Dennis with lyrics by Earl K. Brent in 1946. It was first recorded by Herb Jeffries in 1947 but gained prominence after its introduction in the 1953 film Jennifer, where Dennis himself performed it on piano. The song’s haunting theme of lost love and longing has made it a staple of the Great American Songbook. It became especially associated with Frank Sinatra, who featured it prominently (including closing his 1971 farewell concert with it), and Ella Fitzgerald, who recorded it multiple times and called it her favorite. Other notable versions include Nat King Cole (1953), Chet Baker, June Christy with Stan Kenton, and Shirley Bassey, showcasing its enduring appeal in intimate, torch-song interpretations.
