Amazing Grace

“Amazing Grace” was written by English poet John Newton and first published in 1779, later paired with a traditional melody that circulated widely in Britain and North America. Emerging from the evangelical revival era, the hymn reflects themes of redemption that resonated across social and religious boundaries.

By the 19th century, the song traveled through oral tradition, hymnals, and folk gatherings, eventually finding a natural home on the guitar. As the instrument became central to folk, blues, and gospel traditions, players used it to carry communal singing, making the piece a staple far beyond church walls.
