Along Together
“Alone Together” is a poignant jazz standard composed by Arthur Schwartz with lyrics by Howard Dietz. Introduced in the 1932 Broadway musical Flying Colors by Jean Sargent, it quickly became a hit, charting with Leo Reisman and His Orchestra (vocal by Frank Luther) that year. The song’s introspective theme of finding strength in intimate connection amid isolation has made it a beloved part of the Great American Songbook. It evolved into a favorite among jazz musicians starting with Artie Shaw’s 1939 recording, the first jazz version. Its unusual form and evocative changes inspire ballad and up-tempo interpretations. Notable performers include Chet Baker (1959), Tony Bennett (1960 album Alone Together), Bill Evans, and Paul Desmond with Jim Hall, whose versions highlight its emotional depth and improvisational potential.
