Air on the G String
“Air on the G String” is August Wilhelmj’s violin and piano arrangement of the second movement in Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major. Bach wrote the suite between 1717 and 1723. In the late 1800s Wilhelmj transposed the piece to C major and dropped the melody down an octave to be able to play it entirely on the G string of the violin – the lowest string. From then on it’s been referred to as “Air on the G String.”

Trivia
The song “A Whiter Shade of Pale” by Proco Harum uses part of the chord progression of “Air on the G String.”
Procol Harum’s lead singer Gary Brooker said this to Uncut magazine: “Things can be gifted. If you trace the chordal element, it does a bar or two of Bach’s ‘Air On A G String’ before it veers off. That spark was all it took. I wasn’t consciously combining Rock with Classical, it’s just that Bach’s music was in me.”
