Air on the G String
Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach, Air on the G String originates from the Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major (BWV 1068), written around 1731 during the Baroque era. The movement was originally titled simply Air, scored for strings and continuo.
Its familiar name emerged in the 19th century after violinist August Wilhelmj arranged the piece to be played entirely on the violin’s lowest string. That transcription helped secure its lasting popularity, especially in intimate concerts and ceremonial settings.
