(Back Home Again in) Indiana
Published in 1917, Ballard MacDonald and James F. Hanley’s “Back Home Again in Indiana” transitioned from a Tin Pan Alley hit to a definitive jazz standard. Renowned for its nostalgic lyrics and sentimental melody, the song became a staple for legends like Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole.
This enduring work gained immense cultural significance as the traditional pre-race anthem for the Indianapolis 500, most famously performed by Jim Nabors. Its harmonic structure also served as the “contrafact” foundation for Charlie Parker’s bebop masterpiece “Donna Lee.”
