St. James Infirmary Blues – Lead Sheet

St. James Infirmary Blues

First documented in the early 20th century, this jazz standard traces back to older British ballads like “The Unfortunate Rake.” Lyricist Joe Primrose is credited on a 1928 copyright, though the name is widely considered a pseudonym tied to folklorist Irving Mills.

Popularized during the jazz age, it became closely associated with Louis Armstrong’s 1928 recording, notable for its dramatic spoken intro and stark minor mood. The piece has since been reimagined by artists from Cab Calloway to Janis Joplin, bridging folk, jazz, and blues traditions.
