Trambone
“Trambone,” an instrumental guitar showcase composed by legendary fingerstyle pioneer Chet Atkins, was first recorded and released in 1957 on his album Hi-Fi in Focus. The upbeat, sliding riff-heavy tune highlighted Atkins’ innovative technique of imitating a trombone’s glissando effects using bent strings and harmonics on the guitar, blending country picking with jazz influences during his peak period as a Nashville session ace.
Though originally an album track, “Trambone” became one of Atkins’ signature pieces, performed live including on the Grand Ole Opry in 1957, and it exemplified his role in shaping the smooth “Nashville sound” while pushing the boundaries of what a solo guitar could express.
