Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Written by Charles Wesley in 1739, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” blends poetic theology with a melody adapted from Felix Mendelssohn’s Festgesang (1840). William H. Cummings later reshaped the tune for congregational use, giving the carol its familiar, triumphant contour.
Once debated for its concert-hall origins, the song ultimately became a Christmas standard. Its bold intervals and steady harmonic motion translate especially well into instrumental arrangements, allowing the melody and harmony to remain clearly defined even outside a choral setting.ovable type.
