Scarborough Fair
“Scarborough Fair” is a traditional English ballad rooted in the late medieval period, associated with the Yorkshire trading town of Scarborough. Its haunting Dorian-mode melody and riddle-based lyrics reflect early folk traditions built around memory, symbolism, and oral storytelling.
The song reached a wide modern audience through Simon & Garfunkel’s 1966 recording, which intertwined the melody with the anti-war counterpoint “Canticle.” That studio layering reframed the ancient tune, giving it new emotional and cultural weight during the folk revival.
