Hush, Little Baby
“Hush, Little Baby” is a traditional American lullaby of unknown authorship, likely originating in the mid-19th century southern United States. Passed down orally, it reflects domestic folk traditions where simple melodies supported intimate, at-home music-making rather than formal performance.
By the early 20th century, the song entered popular recordings, including versions by Ella Fitzgerald. Its steady, repetitive structure also aligned with the guitar’s growing role in American folk music, where portable instruments helped preserve and circulate lullabies beyond the home.
