Mary Had a Little Lamb
“Mary Had a Little Lamb” is a classic American nursery rhyme with lyrics by Sarah Josepha Hale, first published in 1830. Its simple story and repetitive structure made it ideal for children’s education and early literacy exercises.
The song gained lasting fame when Thomas Edison recorded it on his phonograph in 1877, marking one of the first known audio recordings. As the guitar became increasingly popular in 19th- and 20th-century American folk traditions, songs like this were often shared alongside it, helping carry nursery rhymes from homes and classrooms into informal musical gatherings.
