Danny Boy

“Danny Boy” pairs lyrics by Frederic Weatherly with the traditional Irish tune “Londonderry Air,” collected in the mid-19th century. Weatherly wrote the words in 1910, later adapting them to the melody after hearing it sung, creating a song steeped in longing and farewell.

Popularized during the early 20th century, the song became associated with Irish identity, emigration, and remembrance. Notable recordings by John McCormack, Judy Garland, and later Elvis Presley helped cement its emotional power across classical, folk, and popular traditions.
