Something
“Something” is a tender, romantic ballad written by George Harrison, released by the Beatles on their 1969 album Abbey Road. Credited to Harrison alone (though early Beatles practice used Lennon–McCartney), it marked his emergence as a songwriter rivaling Lennon and McCartney. Issued as a double A-side single with “Come Together” in October 1969, it topped the US charts and became one of the band’s most covered songs.
Inspired partly by Harrison’s wife Pattie Boyd and echoing James Taylor’s “Something in the Way She Moves,” the track features Harrison’s exquisite guitar solo and lush orchestration. Frank Sinatra hailed it as “the greatest love song of the past 50 years,” often performing it (sometimes miscrediting it to Lennon–McCartney). Notable covers include Elvis Presley, Shirley Bassey, and Ray Charles.
