Love Me Do
“Love Me Do,” the Beatles’ first single, was written mainly by Paul McCartney in 1958–59, with input from John Lennon (credited Lennon–McCartney). Released October 5, 1962, in the UK on Parlophone, it reached number 17 and later topped the US charts in 1964, helping ignite Beatlemania and the British Invasion.
Its recording featured three versions: an early take with Pete Best (unreleased until 1995), the single with Ringo Starr on drums and Lennon’s memorable harmonica, and the Please Please Me album cut with session drummer Andy White (Ringo on tambourine). This debut captured the band’s raw charm and signaled their rise.
