Killing Me Softly
“Killing Me Softly with His Song” was written in 1972 by Charles Fox with lyrics by Norman Gimbel, inspired by singer-songwriter Lori Lieberman after hearing Don McLean perform. Lieberman recorded it first, but the song became a global hit in 1973 through Roberta Flack, whose intimate, understated delivery defined its legacy.
Flack’s version won the Grammy for Record of the Year and topped the Billboard charts, its gentle groove and confessional tone resonating widely. In 1996, Fugees reimagined it with a hip-hop-inflected arrangement, introducing the song to a new generation while preserving its emotional core.
