Black Orpheus
“Black Orpheus” is the English title commonly associated with “Manhã de Carnaval,” composed in 1959 by Luiz Bonfá with lyrics by Antônio Maria for the film Black Orpheus. The movie, set in Rio de Janeiro during Carnival, helped introduce bossa nova to international audiences after winning the Palme d’Or and an Academy Award.
Bonfá’s haunting melody, first sung onscreen by Elizeth Cardoso, quickly became a jazz favorite. Instrumental versions by artists such as Stan Getz brought it into the American jazz repertoire, where its minor-key lyricism and gentle sway continue to captivate performers and listeners alike.
