Out of Nowhere
“Out of Nowhere” was written in 1931 by Johnny Green (music) and Edward Heyman (lyrics). Introduced during the early swing era, it quickly became a favorite among dance bands and crooners. Its unexpected key shifts and flowing melody gave the tune a slightly elusive quality, matching the lyric’s romantic surprise.
Early recordings by Bing Crosby helped popularize it, while later jazz interpretations by Charlie Parker and Chet Baker turned it into a jam-session staple. The harmonic movement—particularly its opening leap—proved irresistible to improvisers, ensuring the song’s lasting place in the jazz canon.
