Midnight, the Stars and You

“Midnight, the Stars and You” was written in 1934 by Harry M. Woods, Jimmy Campbell, and Reg Connelly. It was memorably recorded by Ray Noble and his orchestra, featuring vocalist Al Bowlly. A tender dance-band ballad of the interwar years, it exemplified the polished British hotel-orchestra style popular on both sides of the Atlantic.

Decades later, Stanley Kubrick revived the song in his 1980 film The Shining, using the original 1934 recording over the haunting final scene. Its warm, nostalgic glow—captured with early electrical recording techniques—creates a striking contrast with the film’s chill, giving the tune an eerie afterlife far beyond the ballroom.
